The cost savings below that is just not that big. That said, I'd probably look for a deal with 8GB RAM, a 128GB or 256GB SSD (rather than eMMC), and maybe even an i3 rather than a Celeron. The RAM and CPU are tight for my VM, but I'm optimizing for footprint on my OSX system, you won't be able to add RAM and CPU as easily on your hardware.

The 64GB of storage has been very sufficient, though something like half of it is Windows and Windows managing updates - there were 32GB eMMC systems out there, and I would definitely not consider them viable.

My Quicken+TurboTax VM has 1 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of disk space. The device described would PROBABLY work, if you are being very literal as to using only TurboTax. Uninstall everything you can, and don't use the browser. If you literally only use the laptop for taxes, then it's likely missing out on all of the juicy security exploits. I'm not even sure concerned about security. Of course, you definitely should make sure you have a good plan for backups, so that when the day of reckoning arrives, you can just hit BestBuy and grab something. Or something interesting might happen, such as Chromebooks with support for Windows in a VM. Every year you can hold out is another year you don't have to worry about the next device's end of life. IMHO, unless you have active concerns about the current device, there is no particular advantage to accelerating your move to a new device. You would be able to use it from your iPad Pro, though I can't say how mobile-friendly its interface is.

I assume you don't have the 1116 Schedule B issue, but on the forum a number of long-time TurboTax users have switched to OLT this year because of it, which is web based and free (for federal). Perhaps the clerk was referring to the fact that laptops don't have CD-ROM drives any more. I don't know what the clerk was talking about as far as not being able to copy the tax data files to the new machine. Just make sure it has, at a minimum, 8 GB RAM, and that the screen resolution is 1920x1080 or higher (not 1366x768). And of course, you could still go with a laptop.

There are PC manufacturers who make an all-in-one form factor for cheaper.

Yes, iMacs are expensive, but so are iPad Pros.

Whether TurboTax Mac can open TurboTax Windows previous year returns is a TurboTax-specific question, but I would think yes.
